McDonald’s Japan Takes a Green Step

McDonald’s Japan has announced that starting in April, 23 of its locations in the Nagasaki Prefecture would charge customers for plastic bags. All sizes of bags will be subject to a ¥5 fee to reduce the use of plastic and encourage decarbonization.

McDonald’s Japan unveiled its new environmental goals in the same release, aiming to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from its offices and stores by 50.4% by 2030 compared to 2018. By the end of 2023, the corporation had already reduced its emissions from 2018 levels by 16.1%. The move comes after the company’s other environmental initiatives, which include recycling Happy Meal food and toys and providing paper salad boxes, straws, and wooden cutlery.
