Recycled Plastics: Japan’s Race to Stay Ahead

Takiya Resource Circulation Systems, founded in December 2020 with investment from Uniadex, Daiei Kankyo, and Resource Circulation Network, aims to promote resource circulation through digitalization. With Japan’s push toward carbon neutrality and a circular economy, plastic recycling has gained importance. The company is developing initiatives to create a recycling flow for plastics. In the past, Japanese companies mainly focused on thermal recovery, turning waste into fuel for power generation, rather than using recycled materials. However, globally, particularly in Europe, regulations are changing, requiring the use of recycled plastics for product distribution. By around 2030, these rules could apply worldwide, and Japan will need to catch up with other developed countries or risk falling behind in adopting recycled materials
