Unlocking Academic Potential: Scholarships for Residing Students in Japan

The Japanese government plans to expand the scope of foreign university students eligible for scholarships from April to provide more academic opportunities to children of the country’s growing number of foreign workers. The education ministry will target students residing in Japan with their parents under a “dependent” visa, provided they have completed elementary, junior high, and high school education in Japan and intend to work and stay in the country after graduating.

The Japan Student Services Organization expects around 500 to 1,000 students to be newly eligible for the scholarships which come in the form of grants or loans. Lawmakers from the ruling Liberal Democratic Party and civic groups have called for an expansion to secure foreign labor amid the declining population.

McDonald’s Japan has announced that starting in April, 23 of its locations in the Nagasaki Prefecture would charge customers for plastic bags. All sizes of bags will be subject to a ¥5 fee to reduce the use of plastic and encourage decarbonization.

McDonald’s Japan unveiled its new environmental goals in the same release, aiming to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from its offices and stores by 50.4% by 2030 compared to 2018. By the end of 2023, the corporation had already reduced its emissions from 2018 levels by 16.1%. The move comes after the company’s other environmental initiatives, which include recycling Happy Meal food and toys and providing paper salad boxes, straws, and wooden cutlery.
